When you live on the Jersey shore, come spring time there is one major thought crossing your mind...
Do I have enough time to get in shape for the summer??
After indulging during the cold, snowy winters we are all left carrying a little more weight than we want to. After all, it is the festive season right? It would be a crime not to enjoy Thanksgiving or Christmas, or go out for drinks on New Years Eve, wouldn't it? Of course it would, what good is being in great shape if you can't enjoy the things in life that you love? So now that we got that off our conscience and are guilt free, it is time to get to work.
The first thing you have to do is stop worrying whether or not you will hit your goal weight by your designated deadline. Stressing over how much weight you have to lose and how much time you have to do it in does nothing but create problems and stress you out. First off, being stressed has been linked to weight gain because it causes a rise in cortisol production and that is something we definitely don't want. Secondly, too many people spend all their time worrying rather than beginning their weight loss journey. Who cares if you have enough time or not, just start doing something. Start exercising a little bit each day and start reducing the amount of calories you take in. If that is too much for you in the beginning, simply start cutting out a specific food here and there. Maybe give up soda or late night chip munching? Still too much? Try this solution then: Say you drink two glasses of soda a day, just limit them to one per day. Still too much? You can go as far as to drink one less soda a week to start. See the trend? Baby steps are better than no steps at all.
The same goes for exercising, start small. Don't even call it exercising, just become more active. Everyone has heard this before but it makes complete sense and can be very effective, start taking the stairs instead of the elevator, don't look for the closest possible parking spot and enjoy the 2 minute walk, ride your bike to your friends house, chase your kids around the back yard...the possibilities are endless!
This is simply the beginning. Start implementing some of these tactics and stick with it 100% and you WILL see results. I'll be back with more tips and words of encouragement but until then, stay happy, committed, and determined.
